Bob Smock
Bob Smock is a cyber security executive advisor and consultant with 40 years of IT experience, including 30 years in information and cyber security risk management. During that time, he has conducted or led more than 2000 security program evaluations as both practitioner and consultant in numerous commercial and public sector/state and local government industry verticals.
Prior to December 2020, Mr. Smock led the Gartner Public Sector Security and Risk Management team since 2008, with projects stretching around the globe. Before joining Gartner, Bob spent almost 20 years as the lead government official with cyber security responsibility for the protection of NASA Space Shuttle and Space Station operations. Before that, Mr. Smock was the Director of Rockwell International’s Information Security Consulting group.
Over the past dozen years, Bob has been instrumental in assisting state and local enterprises across the country in developing their enterprise-wide cyber security strategies and improving their overall protection postures. Today, Bob is an on-going security advisor to governors, legislatures, and CIOs for state, county, and city clients from coast to coast. Bob has also been active with the National Governor’s Association as well as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in developing a national strategy for improving cyber security at the state enterprise level.
Bob is a college-level educator, writer, and industry-recognized public speaker. He holds CISSP, CISM, and PMP professional certifications, and is a graduate of the U.S. Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Mr. Smock also holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science/Electronics Engineering from Texas A&M University.
